Building sustainable alumni networks in East Asia: Strategic approaches and leadership pathways
Abstract
This paper examines the strategic development of sustainable alumni networks in East Asia, emphasising the pivotal role of alumni leadership in fostering engagement and advancing institutional priorities. The research focuses on the progressive functioning of alumni associations and sustainable approaches through structured leadership development pathways. Through case studies of the University of Glasgow’s initiatives, this paper highlights actionable insights and best practices that align with regional dynamics and alumni motivations, including passion for their alma mater, recognition and career development. These findings provide a framework for enhancing international alumni relations and leveraging alumni networks to strengthen institutional reputation in an evolving global context. Selina Wu is the International Alumni Officer at the University of Glasgow, specialising in fostering vibrant alumni networks across international priority markets. With over seven years of experience in alumni relations and digital marketing, Selina has developed expertise in strategic planning, event organisation and leveraging social media to enhance international engagement. Her current role focuses on developing sustainable international alumni groups and networks, with a particular emphasis on East Asia.
Xiang Li is a passionate development professional who has extensive experience in alumni relations, external engagement and student experience. She is the Director of Internationalisation at the Adam Smith Business School. Prior to this role, she led the development and implementation of the alumni engagement strategy and won the University the 2020 Circle of Excellence Gold Award for the China Alumni Association Programme.
