Hello, my name is Dr. Joseph Sirven, I am Professor and Chairman of the Department of Neurology at Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, Arizona. I am gonna be presenting a narrated lecture entitled Classifications System of Seizures and Epilepsy. In order to understand the entire concept of seizures and epilepsy, it is important to understand the general classifications system, the terminology and the concepts that underlie the classifications system.

All material that I am presenting in today's lecture pertains to the International League Against Epilepsy, or ILAE commission on classifications and terminology on epilepsies and seizures and their efinitions and classification scheme for seizures and epilepsy. There have been a number of stepwise improvements, refinements on the classifications of seizures and epilepsy over the years. As this slide shows, the first classifications was published in 1981 with the classifications of seizures. In 1989, the classifications of epilepsies was noted. 2001, 2006, and 2009 all represent refinements to the classification systems as our understanding of the path of physiologic mechanism that underlie seizures and epilepsy becomes better understood from a number of different levels of evidence and information. What I will be showing you today is the latest approach to the classification of seizures and epilepsy, as proposed by the ILAE commission that was recently published in 2010.
