Biography

Stephanie Mel is an Associate Teaching Professor in the Section of Molecular Biology at the University of California San Diego. She received her B.S. in Genetics from the University of California Davis and her Ph.D. from the University of California San Francisco, where she worked with Dr. Robert Stroud in... read morethe Macromolecular Structure Group. She then moved to a post-doctoral fellowship with Dr. John Mekalanos in the Department of Microbiology at Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Mel joined the teaching faculty at University of California San Diego in 1998 and has taught a wide variety of both laboratory and lecture courses in fields including structural biochemistry, molecular biology, physiology, and genomics. She has been honored with several teaching awards at UC San Diego, including the Chancellor’s Associates Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching. Dr. Mel’s work has focused on introducing research into the undergraduate classroom; she is the co-director of UCSD’s Introductory Biology Laboratory CURE (Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experience) which brings an authentic research experience on soil microbiomes to thousands of undergraduate students each year.
