Biography

Dr. McWhir received his undergraduate degree in animal science and an MSc in quantitative genetics from the University of Guelph in Canada. He then completed his PhD in experimental embryology with Prof. Bob Church at the University of Calgary and Prof. Martin Evans, Cambridge, where he worked on the derivation... read moreof embryo-derived cell lines. Following this he held 2 consecutive postdoctoral fellowships at Edinburgh University studying ES derivation and gene targeting in mouse ES cells. In 1994, he was appointed principle investigator at the Roslin Institute where he established a stem cell and gene targeting group based on the mouse ES system. Dr. McWhir sadly passed away in August 2017.
