Biography

Brian MacVicar is a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Brain Research Center at the University of British Columbia, Canada. He received his BSc, MSc and PhD from the University of Toronto. His research focuses on astrocytes which are the most common cell type in the CNS and yet... read moretheir functions are still not fully understood. His lab is using two photon laser scanning microscopy and two photon photolysis to investigate the functional interplay between astrocytes and cerebral blood vessels. He was recently awarded directorship of the prestigious Leducq Foundation Transatlantic Networks of Excellence Program. He also has been awarded many research grants over the past two decades, such as the Canadian Institutes for Health Research, the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research, the Medical Research Council, the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research, the National Centres of Excellence and the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
