Interviewer: Today I'm interviewing Dr. Giulio Boccaletti. Dr. Boccaletti, amongst other affiliations, is an Honorary Research Associate at the Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment, Oxford University. A list of his current and past affiliations can be viewed via the link that accompanies this interview. Dr. Boccaletti is also the author of, "Water - a Biography", published by Pantheon Books in September 2021, and an article, The New Land Economy, published in the 11th of February 2022 issue of Project Syndicate. It is the argument Dr. Boccaletti sets out in that article that is the subject of this interview. Listeners are expected to have read the article prior to listening to this interview. Dr. Boccaletti, thank you for sparing the time for this interview. You wrote the green transition will require a fundamental reconsideration of how we apportion rights to the planet's surface. In your article, you set out why you believe this is necessary. Let me start by asking, who do you suggest should do what and over what time scale? Dr. Boccaletti: Well, thank you for having me. It's a good question. I think we only have partial answers to it. The premise is that we're going to have to rely on the landscape to do many different things. Obviously, we want the land to absorb carbon out of the atmosphere.
