Hello. My name is Hironobu Fujiwara. I am currently studying at the RIKEN Center for Developmental Biology in Kobe, Japan. Today I'd like to talk about several of the extracellular matrices, ECM in mammalian skin.

Here is outline of my talk. First, I'll explain the general importance and function of cell-ECM interactions. Second, I'll talk about the skin ECM, which comprises a basement membrane and interstitial matrix. Third, skin ECM heterogeneity. Fourth, ECM-integrin interactions in epidermal stem cell regulation. And fifth, non-cell-autonomous functions of the skin ECM. I'll then move on to the role of the ECM in aging and associated pathological conditions, followed by perspectives.

First, I'll talk about the general importance and function of cell-ECM interactions.

During the developmental of complex multicellular organs, including the skin, stem, or progenitor cells, differentiate into distinct cell types. These cells aggregate into tissues where they are positioned in the current place, and simultaneously engage in appropriate cellular interactions. As a result, the integrated cells establish emergent properties of a complex organ system. Scientists have long been investigating the formation of such multicellular assemblies and the mechanisms that keep the cells in their proper place and enable them to develop communication networks.
