  12. Appendix

  1. Introduction

  2. HST understands the significant impact high quality, compliant MARC records have on the successful integration of electronic resources into the research & library infrastructure. Accordingly, HST has invested considerable resources in the development of top notch, standards-compliant records, working with King's College London Bibliographic Services department. The process of uploading the records should be simple and straightforward, taking no longer than two hours to complete. The explanatory information below should help answer some frequently asked questions.

  3. Format & sampling of HST audio visual presentations

  4. Q: Do you classify your audio visual presentations as equivalent to e-journals or should we see them as a database? It would be very helpful if I could try out a talk, since I don't know whether they are pod casts or video casts or what format they are.
A: Our electronic resource should be seen as a collection of online audio-visual seminar style talks. Once you have viewed a talk & observed its format, you will appreciate how well it fits in with your other material.

  5. Catalogue updates: frequency & modus operandi

  6. HST adds roughly one new series (containing between 10 and 20 talks) to each collection every month. In addition, new talks may be added to a previously-released incomplete series. Files of MARC records for new talks are issued quarterly, together with updated comprehensive files which contain records for the complete collections (including all new talks).

New customers should upload the most recent comprehensive file. From then on, they should import the quarterly update files of new records as they become available.

If you search for: "apoptosis" or "direct marketing", most records listed with "[electronic resource]" are from the HST collection.

  12. Number of series, talks, speakers, editors etc.

  13. Q: It would be very useful to know the number of different authors (speakers, editors etc) in each of the collections.

    Biomedical & Life Sciences Collection:
A: As of April 2012, the collection had 74 series. A series usually has a single editor, however there are series that have more than one editor. Since we add approximately one new series each month, the number of series editors increases by one or two each month.

As of April 2012, the collection had 1487 talks. A talk usually has one speaker, however there are talks with more than one speaker. Since we add approximately one series per month, and each series contains roughly 20 talks, the number of speakers correspondingly increases by 20 or so a month.

    Marketing & Management Collection:
A: As of April 2012, the collection had 57 series. A series usually has a single editor, however there are series that have more than one editor. Since we add approximately one new series each month, the number of series editors increases by one or two each month.

As of April 2012, the collection had 656 talks. A talk usually has one speaker, however there are talks with more than one speaker. Since we add approximately one series per month, and each series contains roughly 10 talks, the number of speakers correspondingly increases by 10 or so a month.

  14. ISSN/ISBN

  15. Q: Do these series have any ISSN or ISBNs?
A: To date, the series do not have ISSN/ISBN, however this issue is under consideration.

  16. Standard authority files & OCLC compliance

  17. As of Oct-08, HST's MARC catalogue uses standard authority files & headings and an initial cursory evaluation by OCLC indicates a positive evaluation of quality & compliance.

The MARC catalogue has been created by the ISS Bibliographic Services department at King's College London. King's College London is a governing member of OCLC and has sought to create records which meet OCLC requirements.
