Herman Waldmann has been Head of the Sir William Dunn School of Pathology in Oxford since 1994, having previously held the title of Kay Kendall Professor of Therapeutic Immunology in Cambridge. His main interest has been to harness the body's own tolerance processes therapeutically for acceptance of transplants and reversal of autoimmune diseases. His laboratory was responsible for the discovery and academic development of the Campath-1 antibodies culminating in the licensing of Alemtuzumab. He is also the scientific founder of TolerRx Inc., a company concerned with developing monoclonal antibodies to promote tolerance therapeutically. He has been a fellow of the British Royal Society since 1990 and a founding fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences since 1998.
