Epilepsy is a unique medical condition inasmuch as its full impact on the affected individual extends beyond seizures, the primary symptom of epilepsy, to include associated cognitive, behavioral, interpersonal, cultural and societal aspects. Though a majority of patients with epilepsy can reasonably expect to become free of seizures with available therapies, others continue to suffer. Further, there is no intervention that can prevent the onset of epilepsy in patients at high risk.

This series will provide an overview of the epidemiology of epilepsy, principles of diagnosis, medical and surgical management, non-pharmacological therapies, psychosocial aspects, and challenges for reducing the global burden of epilepsy.
