Biography

Austin Hughes was a Carolina Distinguished Professor of Biological Sciences and Director of the Institute for Biological Research and Technology at the University of South Carolina. He received his undergraduate training at Georgetown University and his PhD in zoology from Indiana University, Bloomington. His research focused on the molecular evolution... read moreof the vertebrate immune system, the population genetics of immune system genes and the mechanisms by which parasites evade immune recognition. Austin made many valuable contributions to the field of adaptive evolution during his career, and authored 2 books on the topic, as well as numerous papers. He passed away on 31st October 2015, and is survived by his wife Andrea.
